Azure database services for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB are based on community editions of the open-source SQL database products. The products are popular alternatives to Microsoft’s SQL Server product because they are simple to deploy and learn, and they cost less to license. Microsoft does not alter the underlying open-source products, which allows customers to move existing applications with minimal modification, although Microsoft adds advanced security controls and integration with other Azure offerings.

PostgreSQL

Updates to PostgreSQL are exclusive to the Flexible Server deployment option, as Hyperscale has moved to Azure Cosmos DB, and Single Server is deprecated with retirement scheduled for Mar. 2025.

PostgreSQL 11 left community support in Nov. 2023; however, Microsoft will continue to support 11 through Nov. 2024 for Flexible Server deployments and through Mar. 2025 for Single Server deployments, when Single Server deployments are retired. The latest versions of PostgreSQL tend to arrive in November each year. Microsoft has consistently supported the latest PostgreSQL version within two months of release.
