Exchange Online should receive security improvements in 2024, as Microsoft cleans up from a major attack that compromised mailboxes of customers on the service. Microsoft will also raise some capacity limits and improve recovery capabilities, lowering barriers to migration from Exchange Server in private and third-party datacenters. Many new capabilities will also require premium or add-on licenses and higher subscription fees.

Service Overview

What is Exchange Online? Exchange Online is a cloud service for integrated e-mail and scheduling, including calendar and task management.

How is Exchange Online related to Exchange Server? Exchange Online was initially based on the Exchange Server software. However, Exchange Online and Exchange Server have traded roles: now Microsoft develops mainly for Exchange Online but brings some new capabilities to Exchange Server. As a result, Exchange Online is updated frequently, while Exchange Server may receive a new version in the second half of 2025.
