RoadmapSharePoint Online Roadmap
SharePoint Online is a cloud service that provides team collaboration, corporate portal hosting, enterprise search, and content management. It has a client-side customization framework for building unique solutions, and low code / no code customization tools for citizen developers. The service is used to provide back-end file storage and sharing for OneDrive for Business, Teams and Viva products. SharePoint Online is included in enterprise-level Microsoft 365 plans (Standalone Plans are retiring). An on-premises product, SharePoint Server, offers many of the same features, and the current version can work in a hybrid deployment with SharePoint Online to share information.

Recent Updates and Near Term (2026-2027)
The SharePoint near term roadmap emphasizes AI tools and continues retiring legacy technology in line with Microsoft’s AI strategy. Improvements to core features, security and administration of the service will continue but net new features not related to AI will be fewer. Overall, SharePoint remains a key part of Microsoft’s collaboration strategy, on its own and as part of a back-end platform that supports OneDrive, Teams, Loop, Stream, and others. Access to preview features for AI may require enrollment in the Frontier Program.
