Project for the Web, which was planned to eventually replace the Project Online service, will instead become the premium tier of a “new Planner” cloud service rolling out in 2024. Project Online and Project Server remain supported and unchanged with no announced retirement date, focusing on in-depth “waterfall” project management, while the new Planner will focus on lightweight task and Agile project management capabilities.
A New Planner Clarifies Cloud Project Management
Planner is a Microsoft-hosted task management service to organize and track small projects, which is included in all Microsoft 365 plans. Project for the Web is a Microsoft-hosted service targeted toward lightweight project management, with more support for automatic scheduling and other typical project management features than Planner offers.
The new Planner, announced at the Ignite conference in Nov. 2023, will come in two stages:
