Office Online Server is retiring Dec. 31, 2026

Office Online Server is software for use on-premises, providing browser-based viewing and limited editing of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word documents and OneNote notebooks. Previously called Office Web Apps Server, Office Online Server provides functionality similar to that offered in the Microsoft-hosted Office Online service. Office Online Server is required to enable certain features of the supported versions of SharePoint ServerExchange Server and Skype for Business Server.

Microsoft recommends upgrading to Microsoft 365, or licensing and deploying a desktop Office suite to all users. Neither option may be feasible for many customers, who should plan to communicate the loss of services to their users.

Office Online Server has been at version 16.0 since it became generally available in May 2016. Cumulative updates (CUs) in 2021 and 2022 updated OS compatibility to work with Windows Server 2022 and added support for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (SE).
